ARTIST STATEMENT

I am a storyteller. I reconfigure my past memories to create imagined worlds. I weave images to build a balance between the ordinary and fantastic. I embellish my stories through color and line. I tell the stories of people I have met and places I have been, interlacing my own fabrications. In my narratives I seek and embrace the imperfections that characterize our human nature.

My preference for imperfection draws me toward mediums that promote spontaneity, such as watercolor, gouache, and ink. I welcome unpredictability in my process, allowing drips, splashes, and the organic layering of colors. I use color to subjectively describe the personality of the individuals I depict. I incorporate detail and line to emphasize the individual aspects of the characters in their environments. I leave portions of my composition untouched to create areas of rest, allowing space for the viewer to interpret and ascribe their own meaning.
